What this page answers

Will it keep dander in, or blow it back out?

Read the listing for the word sealed before you read the filter rating. Air leaves a vacuum by the easiest route, and an unsealed body gives it one that misses the filter entirely.

Will it start to smell like the dog?

A monthly rinse of a washable filter stops this before it starts. Two models here add an odour cartridge as a second line of defence.

Can it handle tracked cat litter?

Litter is heavy grit, and grit chews a brush roll. Use a hard-floor mode or a bare-floor nozzle near the box, not a spinning bristle roll. A sealed bin matters here too, because litter dust is the part that gets into the air.

What to know

The filter is the easy half

HEPA media is cheap and every brand fits it. What costs money is sealing the body so air cannot slip past the filter on its way out. That is the line to look for on a listing.

What the ratings mean

99.97% at 0.3 microns is the HEPA definition. Several models here list 99.99% at the same particle size under a test standard. The difference between those two numbers matters far less than whether the machine leaks.

Dander is not hair

What triggers most people is protein in skin flakes and saliva, light enough to stay airborne for hours. A vacuum takes it off surfaces; an air purifier handles what is still floating.

Bagged machines have an advantage

Emptying a bin releases a cloud of exactly what you spent the hour collecting. A sealed bag avoids that moment, which is why the Kenmore 600 canister stays on our runners-up list for allergy homes.

Empty it outside, or wear the mask

The moment of highest exposure for an allergy sufferer is emptying the bin, not vacuuming. Do it outdoors if you can, or hand that job to someone who does not react. This advice costs nothing and it changes more than upgrading the filter.

Soft furnishings hold more allergen than floors

Dander settles into curtains, cushions and mattresses and stays there. A sealed vacuum with a powered hand tool reaches all three. Washing at a high temperature reaches them better.

Questions

What is the best HEPA vacuum for pet allergies?

The Bissell 39883 under $200; the Shark LA802 above it.

Does a HEPA filter stop pet allergies?

It reduces exposure. It does not remove the source, which is the animal.

Is a sealed system more important than HEPA?

Yes. An unsealed machine with a HEPA filter leaks around it.

Are bagged vacuums better for allergies?

Usually, because emptying a bin releases dust and a bag does not. See canisters.

How often should I change a HEPA filter with pets?

Twice a year, and wash the pre-filter monthly.

Do I need an air purifier as well?

For dander, it helps more than a better vacuum does.

Does a sealed vacuum help with asthma?

It reduces what gets stirred into the air while you clean. Speak to a clinician about the rest.

Should I vacuum more often with allergies?

More often with a sealed machine, yes. More often with a leaky one can make a room worse.

Are washable HEPA filters as good?

They are, if they are fully dry before they go back in.
