What this page answers
Will hair wrap around the brush roll?
The honest answer is that no roll ends it completely. A good design peels most of the hair off as it turns, so the monthly check takes two minutes instead of the weekly one taking ten.

What about the couch and the stairs?
Pick one of two routes. A lift-away pod gives you mains power on the cushions, or a powered handheld gives you freedom and roughly a quarter of an hour.

Is it light enough to carry upstairs?
Cordless sticks solve it differently: nothing touches the floor, so the load moves into your wrist instead of your back.

What to know
Scrape first, then vacuum
Fur woven into car upholstery will not come out with suction. Drag a rubber tool across the weave to roll it into clumps, then take the clumps with the vacuum. Doing it the other way round wastes a battery charge.
Why the conical tool is so good here
Dyson's screw tool walks hair along the cone and into the bin rather than gripping the bar. On a seat base that has held a dog for three years, it is the difference between one pass and ten.
Mind the runtime
A car interior takes six to ten minutes of real work. A handheld rated for sixteen is fine. A handheld rated for eight is not.
Seat covers end the argument
A washable cover takes ten seconds to remove and it goes in the machine. Every car cleaning guide buries this. It should be the first line.
Do the seat rails and the boot lip
Fur collects under the seat rails and along the lip of the boot where the carpet meets the trim. Both are crevice-tool jobs and both are skipped by almost everyone, which is why a car that looks clean still sheds hair onto a passenger's coat.
Static makes winter worse
Dry cold air holds fur against synthetic upholstery harder than summer air does. A very lightly dampened rubber tool cuts through that; a soaking one just makes mud.
Questions
What is the best car vacuum for dog hair?
A powered handheld. The dustbuster Reveal Pet under $100 in our October scan.
Can I use my cordless stick in the car?
Yes, if it converts to a handheld. Both Dyson models here do.
How do I get dog hair out of car seats?
Rubber scraper first, powered brush second, crevice tool along the seams.
Does a car wash vacuum work for pet hair?
Poorly. Coin-op nozzles have no brush and fur stays in the weave.
What about hair in the boot carpet?
Same method. A rubber broom works well on a flat boot liner.
Do seat covers really help?
More than any vacuum on this page.
How often should I clean a car with a dog in it?
After every muddy walk for the boot, monthly for the seats.
Will a wet-dry vacuum work for car pet hair?
It will lift it, but most have no powered brush, so the weave keeps its grip.
Do rubber car mats help?
Enormously, and they hose off.
